Nollywood filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has called for fresh ways to promote and sell cinema movies in Nigeria. He explained that depending too much on dancing and skits for marketing is tiring and hard on the body.
The award-winning director shared his thoughts at the watch party of new movie project, Anikulapo series. Afolayan pointed out that many filmmakers and actors now use energetic dance videos and funny short skits to build buzz and draw crowds to theaters. While he respects those who do it well, he said it takes a lot of energy and can wear people out over time.
“When asked about cinema movies, Kunle Afolayan says new strategies are needed, as relying on dancing and skits is physically draining,” he highlighted. He stressed that creators need smarter and different methods to reach audiences without always turning to these high-effort promotional styles.
Afolayan, known for thoughtful films like October 1, The Figurine, and the Anikulapo series, has often focused on strong storytelling and cultural depth rather than quick viral trends. His works usually aim for quality and lasting appeal instead of short-term hype. He believes the industry should explore better options that respect the health and creativity of everyone involved.
This view comes as Nollywood grows fast, with more movies hitting cinemas and streaming platforms. Many stars, including Funke Akindele, have used dance challenges successfully to boost ticket sales. But Afolayan’s words spark talk about balancing fun promotion with sustainable practices in the competitive film world.
