Funke Akindele has once again made history in Nollywood with her latest blockbuster, Behind the Scenes, which is now heading to Netflix after an incredible run in cinemas.
The movie, released in Nigerian theaters on December 12, 2025, quickly became a massive hit. It earned a staggering ₦2.7 billion at the box office, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time. This achievement stands out as a major milestone for African cinema, showing how powerful local stories can connect with huge audiences both at home and abroad. The film also broke records as the top-performing Nollywood title in international markets like the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, and Canada.
Directed and produced by Funke Akindele herself under her Funke Ayotunde Akindele Network (FAAN), with co-direction from Tunde Olaoye and distribution by FilmOne, Behind the Scenes tells a touching and relatable story. It follows Aderonke Faniran (played by Scarlet Gomez), a generous mother of two and successful real estate mogul who is loved by everyone for her kindness. However, as people around her start taking her generosity for granted, she gives so much that she neglects her own needs and well-being. The plot explores deep themes like family pressures, the heavy cost of always putting others first, betrayal, sacrifice, and finding emotional balance. These ideas resonated strongly with viewers, sparking conversations about real-life struggles many face.
The star-studded cast includes Funke Akindele in a key role, along with talented actors such as Tobi Bakre, Iyabo Ojo, Uzor Arukwe, Mr Macaroni, Uche Montana, and others. Their strong performances brought depth and emotion to the story, helping it earn praise for its heartfelt moments and strong acting. Funke Akindele poured her heart into the project, and the film’s success reflects her skill in understanding what audiences want—relatable drama mixed with powerful messages.
After dominating cinemas for weeks and drawing massive crowds, the theatrical run has now ended. Exciting news came recently: Netflix has picked up the film for streaming. It will be available on the platform starting April 3, 2026. This marks Funke Akindele’s first project on Netflix, following her successful three-year partnership with Prime Video. Fans who missed it in theaters or want to watch it again can now enjoy it from home.
