Nollywood star Ini Edo has spoken out about the criticism from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over the title of her new film, A Very Dirty Christmas. She says the title is not meant to insult Christianity or the Christmas season.
The movie came out in cinemas on December 16, 2025. It tells a story about family problems and the difference between how things look and how they really are during Christmas.
CAN said the word “dirty” in the title is offensive. They asked the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to review the film. They also asked Ini Edo to say sorry. They wondered how the title got approved.
In a statement on Instagram, Ini Edo explained that she followed all the rules. The film got approval from the NFVCB and other groups. She said she is a strong Christian. Her faith is very important to her. She would never make something that tries to mock or disrespect Christianity or Christmas.
She said the title is just a metaphor. It shows the real struggles people face, even during a happy season like Christmas. Stories often use opposites to make people think, not to hurt feelings.
Ini Edo pointed out that the film was promoted online for a while with the title shown clearly. No one complained then. She was surprised that people only spoke up after the movie was released.
She thanked CAN for their role and said she respects faith in Nigeria. She invited everyone to watch the film in cinemas. She wants people to see it for themselves and decide what they think. She also said she will visit cinemas to meet fans and talk about the movie. See her post below:
